Showcase of Traditional Craft Celebrating Ballymena’s 400th Anniversary

Join us in celebrating Ballymena’s rich heritage of craftsmanship with a special event dedicated to showcasing traditional crafts that have been an integral part of our community for the past 400 years. This event is an opportunity to witness the skills and artistry passed down through generations and to experience the joy of creating with your hands.

Demonstrations and Taster Sessions

We invite you to participate in a variety of demonstrations and taster sessions that highlight the diversity and creativity of traditional crafts:

  1. Felting: Discover the age-old technique of transforming wool into beautiful felted creations, with Felter Shelley Steele. This tactile craft offers a hands-on experience that is both relaxing and rewarding.
  2. Crochet: Learn the basics of crochet with guidance from experienced Crocheter, Amanda Jones.
  3. Aran Knitting: A traditional style originating from the Aran Islands, watch talented knitter Linda Wray knit a cardigan using the iconic cables and stitches that make these garments timeless.
  4. Bobbin Lace Making: Delve into the intricate world of bobbin lace making –
Yvonne Parker, Nora Evans and Patricia Cummings from Ards Bobbin Lace will demonstrate lacemaking and manage a practice pillow for visitors to have a go at a basic stitch. They will also be bringing along pieces of lace for display, and lacemaking books.
  5. Sewing with Irish Linen: Learn essential techniques and tips to enhance your sewing skills with Sewer Sally White.

Exhibition of Historical Crafts

In addition to the hands-on sessions, explore our exhibition featuring images and text that chronicle the history of crafts in Ballymena over the past 400 years. This display celebrates the evolution of local craftsmanship and the enduring impact of these traditional skills on our culture and community.

Sweet Treats and More

No celebration is complete without a taste of something sweet. Enjoy a locally handmade treat crafted from a traditional recipe, adding a delightful touch to your experience of Ballymena’s craft heritage.
