Award-winning woodturner Richard West, based in Connemara, works primarily with found wood, creating unique sculptural forms and vessels that are guided by the character of the material itself. His practice focuses on discovering and enhancing the distinctive qualities within each piece of wood, often finding beauty and value in imperfect, warped, or partially decayed timber by presenting it from a perspective that reveals its unique qualities.
Richard turns almost all of his wood while it is still green (unseasoned), allowing the natural drying process to warp and deform the finished pieces over time, giving the material its own voice in shaping the final form. Colour also plays an important role in his work, he frequently dyes or scorches the wood and applies metal leaf finishes to interior surfaces. The reflective qualities of these concave forms create an interplay of light that can make the pieces appear to glow.
Richard will be exhibiting a new collection of sculptures at The Leitrim Design House from Friday 17th July to Saturday 22nd August. Visitors can also enjoy a video showcasing his creative process, filmed in his studio. In addition, Richard will give a free public talk at 12 noon on Saturday, 1st August, where he will discuss his techniques, inspirations, and approach to working with wood.
