About the event

As part of the build up to The Craft Hub Exhibition, a celebration of creativity and craftsmanship on show in Visual Carlow local goldsmith Mary Bourke will guide you to create your very own sterling silver ring. In this workshop you will learn how to work with sterling silver to bend and form a ring using traditional goldsmith’s tools and techniques. You will learn how to form silver wire into spirals and shape the ring to fit your finger.

All tools and materials will be provided.

Mary is the inspirational goldsmith behind the jewellery brand DeBurca Design. She creates all the pieces at her workbench in her home studio. Her studio is filled with dried leaves, shells, pebbles, and lots of books that feed her imagination and designs. She loves repetition and pattern and the interplay of light, line and shadow, using these concepts she creates beautiful bespoke work as well as her core collections.

Additional information

“As a postgraduate student, while working towards a PhD in Neuroscience I took up a jewellery making evening course in NCAD. I wanted to create something tangible and real, in stark contrast to my daytime challenges detecting minuscule amounts of neurotransmitters in tiny spaces in the brain following a specific task. Every week I lost myself in hammering and soldering… making and creating. I grew to look forward to and cherish this creative space. Driven by this desire for making I began to hone my skills. After an intensive 2 years training on the DCCI Jewellery skills course, I worked in the jewellery trade refining my skills. I have now set up my own studio in rural Carlow overlooking the Barrow valley.”
