Opening Reception: Saturday 1st August, 2-5pm
Artist Talk – 1st @ 2pm
During her architectural education, Dr. Zoë Victoria Gibson developed a strong interest in landscape and ecology. This led to a practice focused on representing landscape through drawing, texture, and alternative media, in particular embroidery – a craft link to her family heritage.
Her Linen Landscapes series emerged from this exploration, translating landscapes onto fabric and textile offcuts. Her Master’s thesis investigated the use of thread in place of traditional media, earning recognition as a distinctive contribution to architectural landscape analysis. Working with woven linen as a gridded surface, she builds detailed compositions using embroidery techniques that reflect both memory and aerial perspectives of meaningful places. Each piece is a slow labour, taking 6–12 weeks to complete, combining intricate stitching with careful attention to recognisable landscape features. Her work invites viewers to reconsider familiar or overlooked places through a tactile, textile-based lens.
The exhibition centres on the Linen Landscapes, alongside drawings that reveal her process of abstracting landscape and connect the embroidered works to their origins. As these drawings have not previously been exhibited, they offer a new dimension to the presentation. New works will also be included, potentially featuring an embroidery of R-Space and Lisburn Castle Gardens.
This exhibition forms part of R-Space’s ongoing Linen Biennale interfestival programme, supporting artist development and innovative projects exploring flax and textile heritage ahead of the Biennale’s return in 2027.
Dr Zoë Victoria Gibson is an artist and researcher completing a PhD in architectural education at Ulster University. Alongside her academic work, she creates linen-based textile and drawing practices exploring landscape through abstraction and embroidery. Her work has been exhibited by Ulster University, National Trust, RSUA and in exhibitions including Craft NI and the Royal Ulster Academy.
