Keeping Time: Connecting County Carlow’s Watchmaking Heritage with Contemporary Irish Craft

Our Craft Month event explores how the traditions of County Carlow’s historic watchmakers continue to inspire contemporary independent Irish watchmaking today.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Carlow’s watchmakers were multi-skilled artisans who occupied an important place within their communities. They were watch and clockmakers, jewellers, opticians, repairers and merchants, combining technical skill with creativity and personal service.

Although modern watchmaking has evolved significantly, many of these traditions remain remarkably relevant. Through my work as co-founder of Sidereus, I continue this spirit of independent craftsmanship by designing, assembling and regulating contemporary Irish watches while maintaining a direct connection with customers and the stories that inspire each collection.

This event offers visitors a rare opportunity to step inside an independent Irish watchmaker’s studio and experience the journey from concept to completed timepiece. Participants will discover how watches are designed, how components are manufactured, how dials are created and how watches are hand-assembled, tested and regulated before reaching the wrist of their owner.

What makes this event unique is its focus on continuity rather than nostalgia. Rather than simply looking back at a lost craft, visitors will discover how a centuries-old tradition continues to evolve today through modern technology, contemporary design and enduring craftsmanship.

By connecting local heritage with present-day making, the event aims to make watchmaking accessible to a broad audience, demonstrating that this highly specialised craft remains alive, relevant and rooted in County Carlow.

The experience will appeal to anyone interested in heritage, design, engineering, storytelling and the enduring relationship between designer, maker and object.
