Join Frances Shanahan as she shares her passion for Patchwork Quilting. Her work is personal, playful and thoughtful, revealing calmness, subtlety and joy. She will showcase her quilts from the last decade, describing their inspiration, sharing how they are made, all the while engaging freely with those attending.
Frances’ first solo exhibition “Into the Light” took place earlier this year in the Exhibition Space, Dooradoyle Library.
She works with natural fabrics, wadding and threads, including cotton, calico, linen and silk; bamboo and wool. She loves hand quilting and piecing. Her mastery of antique traditional blocks has freed her to develop her own designs.
Frances Shanahan was awarded the ‘Tinahely Show – All Ireland Perpetual Quilt Trophy’ – Viewer’s Choice

Frances has always been fascinated by fabric, and remembers, as a child, the rough texture of the flour bags used to make her angel costume; the soft wool of her school uniform and the deep, jewel toned silk of her mother’s party dresses.
In 2009, contemplating stepping back from her full-time role as professional musician and educator, researcher, author, lecturer, programme designer and community musician, she decided to explore this fascination, choosing patchwork and quilting as her medium.
Her work often begins with a person, moment or image in mind. She is drawn to open space, to nature, to fragmented and improvisational work
