Kumihimo – Japanese braiding for jewellery, Part 1 for beginners
This workshop is delivered in two sessions. The first is designed for complete beginners, while the second is tailored for participants who have either attended the initial session or have some prior experience with the technique.
In the first session, you’ll be introduced to the ancient Japanese art ofKumihimo – a method of creating intricate, durable braids. Using a combination of silk and metallic threads, you’ll learn how to produce a smooth, strong, multicoloured braid. The session will cover the basics of colour placement and pattern creation, showing how different combinations and arrangements of threads can influence the final design.
Participants will also be taught how to professionally finish their braid using metal cord ends and a clasp, creating a wearable and polished piece of jewellery. All tools and materials will be provided.

Walk: Marlborough House is in Belfast City centre, nestled between Malmaison Hotel and Albert Clock. A two minute walk from Cathedral Quarter and 8 minutes from Belfast City Hall. Taxi drop off: The front of Marlborough House on Victoria St does not have an area to pull over in a car. Taxis can pull in and stop on Marlborough St just to the right of our building. There are dropped curbs for wheelchair users. Lift to 1st floor studio. Bus: You can easily travel here by public transport. We are a 30 second walk from Laganside bus station and Custom House Square which are major bus hubs. Car & Parking: Marlborough House is situated on a busy, 4 lane, one way street, making it more tricky to reach by car. We have 4 on-street parking spots right outside our building on Victoria St and two to the side on Marlborough St which are usually full. It’s best to head to one of the many nearby car parks, though street parking in Belfast City centre is free after 6pm.
