Join historical interpreters Dr Melissa Shiels and Carrie O’Flynn for an engaging hands-on workshop exploring how letters were written, folded, sealed and delivered during the Regency period. Learn about the postal system of Maria Edgeworth’s day, the cost of sending a letter, and the etiquette and customs that shaped personal correspondence.
The workshop will include a demonstration of traditional quill making, giving participants an opportunity to see how writing tools were prepared before the invention of modern pens. Discover the clever techniques used to fold letters into their own envelopes, create secure seals with wax, and ensure private messages reached their intended recipient.
Participants will have the opportunity to practise historical letter-folding methods, try their hand at sealing correspondence, and compose a letter inspired by the period.
Whether you are interested in history, literature, genealogy, calligraphy, or simply enjoy the pleasure of a handwritten letter, this unique workshop offers a fascinating glimpse into everyday life in the age of Maria Edgeworth.

About the Maker
Doctor Melissa Shiels is a recent doctoral candidate, awarded her PhD from UCC in 16th-century Irish history, focusing on gift exchange and material culture. She has been making historical clothing since 2002, recreating clothing from the Viking, Medieval, Tudor/Elizabethan, Georgian, Regency, and Victorian periods. Melissa gives costumed talks for a wide range of audiences, both academic and non-academic, speaking in museums, libraries, schools, literary festivals, as well as university lectures.
Carrie O’Flynn is a historical reenactor who has been taking part in living history recreations for over 20 years. She has enjoyed demonstrating the Viking, Tudor and Georgian periods but her special interest is the Regency period. Carrie has been involved with the Ellen Hutchins Festival in West Cork for 9 years and has run workshops there and for the West Cork Literary Festival.
