Wild Service
A temporary exhibition with willow and weave, softening the landscape of an East Belfast alley. Honouring and adding to the wild and liminal shared spaces beyond our backgates with objects, care and conscious attention.
Join us between 11am and 1pm on Sunday August 4th to view the work in situ in the alley between Hyndford Street and Abetta Parade in the Bloomfield area of East Belfast. We will hear from the artist and 9ft in Common project leads about the commission. Tea, Coffee and Sunday morning treats will be provided.
Visitors are encouraged to wear weather, appropriate clothes and sturdy shoes, the alley has uneven ground and potential obstacles to navigate.
About the Project
Part of Belfast 2024, 9ft in Common: a Manifesto for the Alleys is a large-scale, city-wide collaborative celebration of the creative potential of Belfast’s alleyways: for growing, making, occupying and connecting. ‘Craft’ is one of our key themes for celebrating the celtic festival of Lughnasadh in early August. We have commissioned textile artist Emily McIlwaine to explore weaving with willow and other materials in response to the environment of the alley behind their house. Emily and some neighbours have recently turned their attention to making better use of the alley as a valuable shared spaceAbout the Artist
Working predominantly with natural fibres, Irish artist Emily McIlwaine creates woven pieces that are influenced by rhythm, ritual and the delicate balance of tension and ease.Emily draws from the natural flora and fauna of the Irish landscape to inspire her work, creating handspun yarns and natural dye pigments to incorporate into designs drawn upon the Bauhaus style. These artworks also explore the influence of Irish tradition, myth and the celtic wheel. More recently, Emily has become a mother and is enjoying getting to know her little person while considering her practice direction. Emily is based at Vault Artist Studios in Belfast.
