Understanding Glazes for Beginners

Learn what a glaze is made from, how to create one and how to fire them.

This course will introduce participants to what glaze is, the role played by raw materials within glazes, how to alter glaze recipes and how the finished fired surface is influenced by the firing process.

It is a theoretical and practical workshop that is intended for beginners and those who want to start their own glaze research and development.

What will you learn?

  • How and when to apply decorative slips, stains, underglaze, and glaze.
  • The 3 main components of a glaze and the function of raw materials and oxides within it.
  • Health and Safety, testing and keeping accurate records.
  • How to mix base glazes and alter their colour or texture.
  • Approaches to glaze application.
  • Introduction to pyrometric cones and the firing process.

Helen Noble is a ceramic artist and part-time lecturer in Ceramics at Belfast Metropolitan College. Having completed her MA in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art, London in 2011, she has a particular interest in and experience of working with glaze and colour.
