A visit to architectural mosaics in the West of Ireland.
Open to mosaic artists and to the public with an interest in mosaics.
Join MAAI on the 7th August for their annual mosaic trip to visit architectural mosaics in Cong and Knock, lunch and a presentation by mosaic artist Helen Miles on ‘The Relevance of Ancient Mosaics to Contemporary Practice’. Helen Miles lives in Scotland, has studied widely and published a number of articles and books. She is immersed in traditional mosaic techniques and was trained by master craftspeople in Greece. We would like to share her expertise with Irish mosaic artists and those interested in mosaics.
We will visit the architectural mosaics, ‘Fishers of Men’, a Catholic University of America’s ‘Spirit of Place’ installation in Cong Woods and the mosiac of the apparition in Knock Basilica, designed by PJ Lynch and fabricated by the Italian Travisanutto Studios, plus a baptismal font by MAAI member Laura O’Hagan. All are welcome.
11 am: Meet at the John Wayne and Maureen O Hara sculpture in Cong Village, opposite the Court House/Tourist Office.
1 pm: Lunch at Synge and Byrne Café, Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
3 pm: Helen Miles presentation ‘The Relevance of Ancient Mosaics to Contemporary Practice’ at the Museum of Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
