‘Interrupted (Journeys)’

Featured Image

‘Interrupted (Journeys)’ is a large-scale collaborative paper installation in the Broighter Gallery, Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre, 24 Main Street, Limavady, County Londonderry BT49 0FJ from the 8th July- 30th August’25, which takes inspiration from aural histories and stories from the local Limavady area.

The lost Ross Sea Party is the unknown story of Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition Supply Ship ‘The Aurora”. Separated from the ship, surviving for almost 12 months, the abandoned sea party lost two men. Thomas King Smyth from Limavady was part of the rescue crew that sailed on the refurbished Aurora to return home.

The journey for the Ross Sea Party was long, enduring and perilous battling storms which caused damage to the rescue ship as well as managing to survive on limited supplies.

This story of hope, courage and determination to reach Antarctic against all the odds is the inspiration for this origami installation created with by Wendy Kelly, James Stewart, Stephen Gifford, Rene Boyd, Leah Batchelor, Lesley McClune, Kathryn Clarke and Lisa Forsythe, Alexander Topping, Myrtle Shannon, Simon Baxter, Leslie Beckett, Clare Soutar, Dave Parker and Donna Batten with artist Rachel Fitzpatrick.

The exhibition will be launched by the Lord Mayor on the 8th July’25 from 2.00-3.30pm and the exhibition will be open Monday: 9:30am – 5pm, Tuesday: 9:30am – 5pm, Wednesday: 9:30 – 5pm & 7 – 9pm, Thursday: 9:30am – 5pm & 7 – 9pm, Friday: 9:30am – 5pm and Saturday: 10am – 1pm
