Backstrap Weaving Workshop
Weaving uses 2 sets of threads: one set called the warp kept under tension, and the second called the weft, which is woven through the warp. Artist Katie Nolan will guide you through the process of weaving using your body to create the tension through a primitive technique known as backstrap weaving. Used by cultures all over the world, it enabled nomadic people to pack up and carry their projects as they travelled. Weather permitting, the workshop will be held outdoors. Come along and learn how to weave a small belt using your own body and a simple heddle technique. Light refreshments will be served.
This workshop is supported by Cork County Council & Creative Ireland’s Creating Connections Award and is part of Katie Nolan’s Youghal Carpets project.
Katie Nolan is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in textile art who is interested in exploring the existential navigation of the rapidly changing world of work due to advances in robotics and AI. Combining fibre manipulation, drawing and installation – spurred on by the demise of Ireland’s wool industry, Katie is interested in the concept of the human hand as technology. Supported by Creating Connections funding from Cork County Council and Creative Ireland, and in collaboration with Greywood Arts, Katie has been working with former Youghal Carpets factory workers and their families, as well as new communities who have arrived into East Cork, to collectively explore our multicultural textile heritage.
